What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is the worlds oldest and largest Fraternity. Its history and traditions date to
antiquity but the origins of the fraternity pravticed today arose from origins
in the late 16th and 17th centuries. Its single purpose is to take good men and
make them better. Its bonds of friendship, compassion and brotherly love have
survived even the most divisive political, military and religious conflicts
through the centuries. Freemasonry is described as a beautiful system of
morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. Which can be interpreted
as: Freemasons use the metaphors of operative stone masons' tools and
implements, against the allegorical backdrop of the building of King Solomon's
Temple to strengthen morality within its membership.
Who May Join And What Are The Qualifications To Become a Mason?
Generally to be accepted into the Masonic Fraternity, a candidate must:
be a man who comes of his own free will; believe in a supreme being, the name of
which is open to the interpretation of the candidate; be at least 21 years of
age however, the age of admittance may be lowered to the age of 18 at the
discression of the Grand Lodge to which the candidate is petitioning; have good
morals and a good reputation; be of sound mind and body (Lodges in the past
denied membership to men who had physical disabilities, now however, if a
potential candidate says a disability will not cause problems, it will NOT be
held against him); and finally, the candidate must be able to furnish character
references.
